University of Toronto – CEIE Building

General Contractor: Bird Construction

The CEIE Building (Centre for Engineering, Innovations and Entrepreneurship) is a 225,000 sq. ft. facility located on the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. The building consists of below ground parking levels and 8 floors above ground, including a penthouse.

This building’s design moves beyond the traditional lecture hall and classroom, by incorporating unique collaborative learning and hands-on design spaces. These spaces can be organized in a variety of configurations to promote dynamic group work or more formal teacher/student presentations. In addition, there are dedicated spaces for alumni and industry partners to meet with students and collaborate with faculty.

The University of Toronto Institute for Sustainable Energy is housed at the CEIE. The Institute is an inclusive, multidisciplinary initiative designed to bring together researchers, students, and teachers from across the University, together with partners from industry and government. Its goal is to increase energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of energy use and conversion.

Symtech was responsible for the complete electrical and communications systems. The design of the CEIE building incorporated smart building concepts, integrating heating, cooling, electrical and communications systems into a single network, which provides greater energy efficiency. Construction was mainly completed using concrete and structural steel components, with a curtain-wall system and pre-cast paneling on the exterior.
